Sister Mary Joan Ginsterblum, OLVM, 102, died on December 29, 2021, at Saint Anne's Community at Victory Noll, Huntington.
Sister Mary Joan was born in Meyer, Iowa on December 28, 1919 to Anthony Ginsterblum and Amy DeMuth Ginsterblum. Her parents, four brothers, John, Donald, Richard and Neil Ginsterblum, and three sisters, Helen Watson, Ann Sheridan and Alice Farris precede her in death. She is survived by one sister, Marian Carroll and her nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her Victory Noll sisters with whom she shared life and community for 82 years.
Sister Mary Joan entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters on January 25, 1939, and made first vows on August 5, 1941. She served in the missions in California, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and at Victory Noll. Sister returned to Victory Noll in 1975 to minister as a physical therapist until 1998 when she retired from active ministry. She enjoyed being in nature, especially bird watching. She worked identify and labeled each tree at Victory Noll adding a dedication to a Sister of the congregation. She learned to do woodcarving, creating beautiful statues and figurines. She also carved the peace pole from a pine tree on the property.
Services will be Friday December 31, 2021. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, services will be for Sisters and family only and will be livestreamed.
Burial will be at Victory Noll Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN, is in charge of arrangements.
