Three candidates for Huntington city mayor will be featured in a forum hosted by Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters at 6:30 p.m. on October 10 in the O’Donnell Room on the Victory Noll campus, located at 1900 W. Park Drive in Huntington.
The forum will include Republican candidate Larry Buzzard and independent candidates Johnnie Hiles and Richard Strick. Candidates will answer questions on issues concerning Huntington and will be given opportunities to present their vision for the city.
The forum is open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Seating is extremely limited.
The moderator for the forum will be Jeremy Nix. Nix is a Huntington attorney who also serves as chief deputy prosecuting attorney for Huntington County and was named Chief of the Flint Springs Tribe in 2018 for his contributions to the Huntington community.
During the forum, the public will be able to submit questions for the candidates. All questions will be considered, but not all questions may be presented during the event.
“The idea of hosting a candidates forum for mayor came from our desire as a community of Sisters to get to know the candidates and why they want to be mayor,” says Sr. Beatrice Haines, who serves as social justice promoter at OLVM. “We decided to open the forum to the public in order to share this opportunity to hear directly from the candidates with the broader community of Huntington.”
Haines says the OLVM Sisters are committed to ongoing prayer, study, and action on behalf of human rights, justice and peace.
“We believe it is our Christian responsibility to be informed voters, to discern which candidates are more likely to foster opportunities for every person to thrive and be a vital part of our community,” she says. “This is an integral part of our commitment to the justice called for by the Gospel.”
Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters is a religious community of women dedicated to serving the poor in the name of Christ. Founded in 1922 by Father John Joseph Sigstein, the members of the Victory Noll community minister to those in need.
